February is the start of my photography season, as I am a press photographer for the Portland Winter Light Festival. My cameras gather dust in December and January, so I know the year has actually started when I dust off the cameras and charge into inky cold evenings to photograph an event. In 2022 my coverage of the event was cut short by an accident, but before then I was able to capture some of the lights.

2022 was the first year I’ve actually gone down to Portland’s waterfront and photographed the cherry trees when they were in bloom. Normally I just stick close to my home on the westside. The park was magnificent – and filled with people taking pictures of the trees and of friends and family. Cameras were everywhere. I loved the opportunity to exercise my 40-year-old, manual focus, Minolta MD Tele Rokkor-X 135mm f/2.8 lens, which imparts a very old-time feel to pictures.

My photography year ends in November with Oregon’s largest Japanese animation convention, Kumoricon. And while my photographic event coverage is rather spotty across four days, the convention is always fun and filled with energy – and a little bit of chaos and frenzy. It’s a great way to end the year.
