(I think I should be still on time but I'm not 100% sure :__D please delete my post if necessary)

Caught Covid during Holy Week and lost my silly little job because of it. That job made me very bitter and miserable, but losing it still was pretty upsetting at first. Oh well.

2022 Portland Winter Light Festival

February is the start of my photography season, as I am a press photographer for the Portland Winter Light Festival. My cameras gather dust in December and January, so I know the year has actually started when I dust off the cameras and charge into inky cold evenings to photograph an event. In 2022 my coverage of the event was cut short by an accident, but before then I was able to capture some of the lights.

Mine are nature pictures. The first is from a local lake, the other two from my yard. I put together a shortlist, then picked three favorites to post here.

Box of colored pencils; the yellow and blue pencils are out. A sheet of paper in the process of becoming a homemade Ukrainian flag sign.

I could not imagine a summary of my 2022 that wouldn't include the war next door (as much as it's fine and necessary to pause thinking about it sometimes). This pic shows my preparation for one of the first protests at the Russian embassy, in the spring. I originally posted it with the title "This Machine Politely Chastises Fascists". It's been hard to not feel useless at times, but as the year went on, I was somewhat comforted that my country has been at least trying to do as much as we can to help. In the autumn, the by then well established protest spot opposite the embassy was part of the tour of Riga I gave to a dear foreign friend. I loved hanging out with my friend offline for the first time. đź’™

My three photos for 2022 are based on the time I spent trying to find some healing outdoors during periods of a very rough year.

The first is from a day I spent volunteering out at one of my favorite farmed animal sanctuaries. On that day I was helping to raise the beams for a cow barn, which was as fun as it was challenging. We placed metal plates along the beams (for points of connection, and, with the help of an excavator and strong strap lines, lifted and guided the beans in place and secured them. I love this place because it is safe place for animals, who are allowed to live out their lives in peace, and for the people that love them. The cow barn had been planned and in the works for some time, and with the completion of the barn, the first rescues came in. There's a FB video by the sanctuary of the first family of cows arriving here (and some footage of the finished barn), for those interested.

a grid of mooring posts sticks out of a smooth frozen lake, casting shadows on it

This was my favorite picture I took in 2022, aesthetically. This is Lake Champlain in January, frozen over and covered in snow. The posts are for mooring boats when it's the season for it.

Dusk on the edge of downtown Sunnyvale, November 12: Crows wheeling and starting to roost on now empty office buildings that were built on spec and until the pandemic, were leased by Nokia (left) and Apple (right). In the background, cranes on what was Macy's and its parking lot. (The towers of the cranes were later lighted in purple for the holidays.)

I didn't take many pictures in 2022. Apart from my tribe of feral cats, I took a number documenting the replacement buildings going up where rental housing, the local 24-hours restaurant, and the offices of our small Silicon Valley city had been. And some showing downtown coming back, with the first unmasked people, the new outdoor cafe seating ... and empty storefronts where there had been cafes and a hair salon before that had hung on for a year but not made it through. But it was also the year we ventured on a couple of tiny road trips. )

2022 was a Long year for many reasons.

a sunny outside pic of protesters at the nurse union's protest in April 2022

2022 was the first year I participated a strike and marched on the streets for my union. Hashtag #nursetoo trended because after two covid years, the employer side didn't want to raise our wages and were actually more intent on pushing forward martial law that would strip health care workers from our basic rights. Cool times! We were without the collective labor agreement for most of the year and the smearing campaign that went on in the media (targeting especially our union head) was interesting to say the least. You'd think that after everything that's happened, lying at nurses' faces and trying to pull the rug under our feet would be the last thing in TPTB's minds but... yeah. We're experiencing a global nurse shortage and the hospital districts and municipalities still seem to think they can do whatever because there's a long line of new nurses queueing behind their door (spoiler alert: there isn't).

I thought I'd start out with my most striking image. Although I have spotted a bunch of wonderful nature moments, usually from our balcony, some of the most remarkable ones last year were due to a grey heron which decided to visit our lake regularly. It turned out to be quite the successful fish catcher.

I had a good year in photography. I looked back recently through the posts on my photography tag looking for something and realized that I did a lot. A couple of things tripped my up from photowalking in fall, but overall, I had a good year.

In November I went to Australia for a holiday and also had a day long stopover in Singapore on my way home due to flight changes. I think I took something like 2000 photos over the 24 days I was away and I still haven't gone through all of them as yet.

[A green sea turtle in a special pool at the turtle hospital in Cairns.]

Libby. On my last day in Cairns I went to the aquarium and visited the Turtle hospital which was interesting to see the work they do to rehabilite sick and injured turtles to hopefully release them back into the wild. I got to feed her while I was there and on the 2nd of December she was released back into the wild after been in the hospital for over a year. There's a video of her release on the aquarium's facebook page.

As last year, my new used car has continued to keep my life moving, and it's been a blessing for my brother's family as well that I have a car and drive. (I think I actually solve too many problems for them at times....) It lets me visit Manhattan at night for enjoyable drives and to take photos of window displays, of which I've posted a lot this year, including the recent holiday/Christmas windows, which are visible here if you're interested.

So, my Hyundai Elantra. I think that a lot of cars have a face, and she certainly does. Cheeky thing.

My Elantra partially in shadows.

As my default icon suggests, I often go sailing when the water isn't hard, and the sun doesn't set at 5pm. Last year I managed to get out for around 800nm during our way to short season.

I'm principally a daysailer, and single hand my 25ft sailboat. I'm on a tidal river that extends around 60nm, but with “obligations“ I seldom go too far upriver.

From the cockpit, this is an indicative photo from last year, but could have been anytime in the last few. 6kn boat speed, well trimmed, on a beam reach.

After the awfulness of the past two plus years, we finally got to take a trip and went to the town of Ludlow in south Shropshire for a few days.

The church of St Lawrence in the town is not a cathedral but it is cathedral sized and is known as 'the cathedral of the Marches' . We live in the border region known as the Welsh Marches.

The church is full of wonders and I thought I'd share three with you.

A medieval stained glass window depicting a young couple who are members of the Palmers' Guild- a guild for people who had been on pilgrimage.
