My partner and I moved in together last year, and this year we continued settling in. We set up bird feeders in the yard and made lots of avian friends! Here's a male Hairy Woodpecker enjoying some suet:

Missed participating last year in "Three for the Memories 2024", as too much stuff was happening back in Jan 2025. So I wanted to be sure to participate again this year.

First photo is from July 4th when we were visiting family in NC. Hubby had parked our car on his mom's lawn to leave room for everyone else visiting to park in her driveway. Everyone meets up at her house to see the fireworks because the city sets them off on the property adjacent to hers since she lives on top of the hill overlooking town. And this picture just reminded me of a Subaru Outback advertisement.

The pink peony is open under the fly-through feeder. I might call this flower style semi-double. When fully open, a large mass of bright yellow stamens dance in the breeze. The fully-double white ones don't really show the center.  It was the first time I got a pink peony to bloom. \o/

In May I took a great trip with friends through Oregon and we ended in California. The timing for the trip, however, was to coincide with the memorial service for my oldest friend's mother.

As she is my oldest friend, I knew her parents the best of all my friends' parents because of the stretch of time over which we saw one another (and she lived just a few doors down from me). I was not close to them but they were always kind to me, and it's interesting how it's the kindness that lingers. Read more... )

This is from a visit to my parents in Pennsylvania in May. I had a difficult trip with delayed and cancelled flights and a mad dash from one end of the Charlotte airport to the other to try and catch a plane. I was stressed and starving by the time I landed. Seeing this mural was just a tiny bit cheering in a moment when I really needed it.

There was a lot of stress for me in 2025, but it had its good moments too.

This shot was an accident that I thought turned out fun! The day my youngest niece, the girl with the pink and blonde hair, graduated from high school was so hot and bright that my camera phone was having a lot of trouble and the screen kept darkening, so I was shooting blind. Also, I was feeling like crap due to the heat. But the colors in all the photos really popped. The bouquet in the corner here is the one her parents gave her. (Seeing my nieces becoming adults is still weird to me; aren't they still kids?!)

Looking back, 2025 was a good year for me. I cut back work to three days a week and that freed up so much time and energy, I am never going back to working more if I can help it. I did a bunch of projects and had great vacations, and I took about 1000 photos every month, but I had no problems picking three for this.

I went to visit my partner Bawdy in Montana in April and we had a lovely week together: hanging out, going to the zoo and the dog park and going on a roadtrip. Which is where we raced the train so I could get out of the car in time to take photos.

This is from our summer holiday. That's Husband sitting out there. We had a summer house for a week somewhere else in Denmark and we were by the coast. (Denmark, if you didn't know, has a lot of coastline. You are never more than a couple hours drive away from one here.) We went down to look at the sunset one evening. I'm quite pleased with how this picture turned out.

This year involved a lot of travel and a lot of heartache

We visited Conwy in Wales for the first time, famous for its massive medieval castle:

We also visited Strasbourg in France which was new to me although not to other half. It has a magnificent cathedral and this madonnna, part south American and part deco influenced fascinated me:

And now the heartache. As some of you know, I am a trans woman and our goverment here in the UK has decided that making our lives as difficult as possible would be a fine idea and I am likely to be losing basic human rights in the coming year.

So just for the record, this is what a trans woman (and indeed her husband) looks like.  I'm 5'6" and no, it isn't a 'bad wig' but my own hair (admittedly coloured these days as I've gone grey). And those obsessed with bits would be most disappointed if I was standing there naked!

The userpic's me in my later twenties. I set out on the journey at 15 and had GC surgery at 21. I met my husband when I was 38.

This was taken for us by a kind Canadian lady in Conwy castle.

There's a superstition in Japan that certain ages are unlucky. The year you turn 36 is unlucky for women. (There are only two options.) I turned 36 in 2025 and it was a bad year for me!

3 for the Memories' 2025 session will be open for posts on January 3, 2026 and will run for 3 weeks until January 24. Do let others know about us, as anyone can participate by just joining the community.

Just a reminder of how the event runs:

1) Three photos only per person during each annual session. Members are encouraged to discuss the reason for their choices.

2) Photos can be hosted at Dreamwidth or elsewhere, and should not be larger than 800 px width or height.

3) All three photos should be in the same post. Cut tags should be placed after the first photo.

3 for the Memories is not a competition, and entries are not being judged. Rather, participants are encouraged to share photos they took in 2025 that they find meaningful in some way or which represent how they experienced the year.

Feel free to drop any questions about the community or how the event runs in comments!

Oscar Mayer Weinermobile in a hotel parking lot

2024 was a year of personal changes, both my own and my partner's. The happiest event was in October when I was finally able to see friends again, and we took a fall foliage road trip. (For anyone who is interested, all my nature pics have been posted in [community profile] common_nature).

This photo was from the first night of the trip when we reached the first hotel. We spotted the Wienermobile in the parking lot. It seemed to be a sign that the trip would be both fun and would go (fairly) well in terms of plans and scheduling. Read more... )

By far my biggest event of 2024 was that I moved! Specifically, my partner and I bought a house together.

Here's my partner taking a picture of her own. This was almost exactly a year ago, early in 2024. We'd decided to get a place together in the spring.

We finally got back to our usual travel patterns after all the nonsense of the past few years and ended up back in Siena in Tuscany, Italy which is our favourite spot due to having honeymooned there.

Vicolo Dei Orifici (Goldsmith's Alley) made deliberately wiggly and narrow and one ended so it could be defended against rioters and looters:

This Kleinfeld Bridal window display photo got the most likes on Flickr out of my 2024 photos. Kleinfeld only installs a new display once every three or so months, but they're often interesting enough that I look forward to them. I continue to enjoy shooting New York City window displays.

2024 proved to be the best year we've had in some time, and although we're still recovering from the disasters in '19 and '20, we ARE slowly but surely climbing our way out!

Amongst other firsts, it was my first year going to a REAL museum, which was in with the zoo in our state capitol. We were all blown away not just by the animals (and here's a bonus pic of a great lion shot my husband got) but by practically every display in the museum. This is the most I've EVER seen of bears, and the closest I'm sure I'll ever be to some, especially the polar bear. Of course, the polars especially were only stuffed, but it was still AMAZING!!!!

Compared to 2023, 2024 was pretty quiet for me: more settling into my new life than a series of (positive) upheavals. I feel like work ate up a lot of my time and energy last year but I didn't want to post photos of that, you know?

I am a fervent homebody, almost reclusive. I dislike being away from home. So 2023 was unusual with what turned out to be the Summer of Road Trips. A contributing reason was that I needed to see how my electric car would do on long distance road trips.

In June I drove from Portland to Tacoma to attend the TWICE Ready to Be World Tour Concert at the Tacoma Dome. The concert was amazing!

In hindsight, as hard as the past year has been, as I've been reviewing it in my head over the last few days, I've come to think that perhaps it is exactly what we needed, and of course, God(s)/The Universe/Powers/Whatever You Want To Call It knows better than we do what we actually need.

I'm going to start in an oddball way, because this first picture was taken both before the next picture and after the last picture. It was part of our Halloween decorations at work, and I've definitely at last been truly blessed with finding what could very well prove to be a permanent job for me. It's actually got me socializing, building friendships, and has been learning and increasing my computer skills again, something I'd long ago given up on after graduating at the top of my class in '03 but never being able to actually use my degrees. My two-year anniversary is quickly coming up, and not meaning to brag, I'm making more money now than I ever made in my entire life. We're far from rich, don't get me wrong please, but I am still making more than I've ever made before and hopefully can at last dig our way out of the mess that had become our life before the improvements started coming, in large part due to my wonderful, blessed company.
