3 for the Memories' 2025 session will be open for posts on January 3, 2026 and will run for 3 weeks until January 24. Do let others know about us, as anyone can participate by just joining the community.

Just a reminder of how the event runs:

1) Three photos only per person during each annual session. Members are encouraged to discuss the reason for their choices.

2) Photos can be hosted at Dreamwidth or elsewhere, and should not be larger than 800 px width or height.

3) All three photos should be in the same post. Cut tags should be placed after the first photo.

3 for the Memories is not a competition, and entries are not being judged. Rather, participants are encouraged to share photos they took in 2025 that they find meaningful in some way or which represent how they experienced the year.

Feel free to drop any questions about the community or how the event runs in comments!

Oscar Mayer Weinermobile in a hotel parking lot

2024 was a year of personal changes, both my own and my partner's. The happiest event was in October when I was finally able to see friends again, and we took a fall foliage road trip. (For anyone who is interested, all my nature pics have been posted in [community profile] common_nature).

This photo was from the first night of the trip when we reached the first hotel. We spotted the Wienermobile in the parking lot. It seemed to be a sign that the trip would be both fun and would go (fairly) well in terms of plans and scheduling. Read more... )

By far my biggest event of 2024 was that I moved! Specifically, my partner and I bought a house together.

Here's my partner taking a picture of her own. This was almost exactly a year ago, early in 2024. We'd decided to get a place together in the spring.

I read a lot lot lot more than I'd read in a while, and ended up reading a LOT of danmei, with this book bingo blackout being just a part of my TBR stack.

Reading, tattoos, and the dog. That sums up my year pretty neatly.

There are the images that best reflect my year. If you want to see the best photos I've taken this year I've got a thread over on Bluesky of my ten or so best.

In 2024 I started some big projects, did a lot of work, serious amounts of work, but things are still in progress. I hate that they are still in progress and not done, but it's where I am.

We finally got back to our usual travel patterns after all the nonsense of the past few years and ended up back in Siena in Tuscany, Italy which is our favourite spot due to having honeymooned there.

Vicolo Dei Orifici (Goldsmith's Alley) made deliberately wiggly and narrow and one ended so it could be defended against rioters and looters:

This Kleinfeld Bridal window display photo got the most likes on Flickr out of my 2024 photos. Kleinfeld only installs a new display once every three or so months, but they're often interesting enough that I look forward to them. I continue to enjoy shooting New York City window displays.

2024 proved to be the best year we've had in some time, and although we're still recovering from the disasters in '19 and '20, we ARE slowly but surely climbing our way out!

Amongst other firsts, it was my first year going to a REAL museum, which was in with the zoo in our state capitol. We were all blown away not just by the animals (and here's a bonus pic of a great lion shot my husband got) but by practically every display in the museum. This is the most I've EVER seen of bears, and the closest I'm sure I'll ever be to some, especially the polar bear. Of course, the polars especially were only stuffed, but it was still AMAZING!!!!

We drove down to Greenup to view the eclipse, and I took pictures of how the sun makes crescents instead of discs with the pinhole effect through tree leaves. This is a long view of the sidewalk when the crescents are hair-thin.

Compared to 2023, 2024 was pretty quiet for me: more settling into my new life than a series of (positive) upheavals. I feel like work ate up a lot of my time and energy last year but I didn't want to post photos of that, you know?

P.S. Because I mentioned Tiamat but did not include a photo of her in my post: cat tax.

I am a fervent homebody, almost reclusive. I dislike being away from home. So 2023 was unusual with what turned out to be the Summer of Road Trips. A contributing reason was that I needed to see how my electric car would do on long distance road trips.

In June I drove from Portland to Tacoma to attend the TWICE Ready to Be World Tour Concert at the Tacoma Dome. The concert was amazing!

In hindsight, as hard as the past year has been, as I've been reviewing it in my head over the last few days, I've come to think that perhaps it is exactly what we needed, and of course, God(s)/The Universe/Powers/Whatever You Want To Call It knows better than we do what we actually need.

I'm going to start in an oddball way, because this first picture was taken both before the next picture and after the last picture. It was part of our Halloween decorations at work, and I've definitely at last been truly blessed with finding what could very well prove to be a permanent job for me. It's actually got me socializing, building friendships, and has been learning and increasing my computer skills again, something I'd long ago given up on after graduating at the top of my class in '03 but never being able to actually use my degrees. My two-year anniversary is quickly coming up, and not meaning to brag, I'm making more money now than I ever made in my entire life. We're far from rich, don't get me wrong please, but I am still making more than I've ever made before and hopefully can at last dig our way out of the mess that had become our life before the improvements started coming, in large part due to my wonderful, blessed company.

Several trees in black and white with a foggy background

I know that for many people 2020 would be the year they'd really like to put behind them. However there was a sense of togetherness that year (however distanced) that offset the awful and stressful events for me.

Instead 2023 has been harder, which has been frustrating. This photo I took a few months ago on a foggy autumn day sums up my mood when looking back. Gloomy. Read more... )

In 2023, I finally got a diagnosis and meds for a health issue that had been causing chronic fatigue for years.

My metabolism improved dramatically, and for a couple of months I lost all interest in sweets, probably because my body was happily making use of its ability to burn the fuel that it already had stored away. When my birthday came, I had enough energy to organize an outing to the zoo and bake a cake, but the cake was mostly berries because I genuinely wasn't into the idea of things like sugar and butter. (This change mellowed out later.) I invited the friend that I mentioned in last year's threeforthememories post. We've been slowly reconnecting throughout the year.

I participated last year and loved seeing everyone's "Three for the Memories" of the prior year.

But it seems so much harder to only choose 3 photos this year because so much has happened in 2023.

So I decided on a theme and my photo theme is "HAPPY"

The first photo is of my Father-In-Law that passed away Dec 22nd 2023. This photo was displayed at his Memorial Service last Saturday. He was a man that loved fly fishing and was truly happy when he was fishing:

matsushima: drove through ghosts to get here (blinding lights)

So much happened for me in 2023. In January, I graduated with an MFA Writing for Children and Young Adults from Hamline University and I applied for a job in Tokyo. In February (on my birthday), I found out that I got the librarian job in Tokyo. In June, I moved all of my stuff from Maryland to my mom's house in Massachusetts. In August, I moved some of my stuff (two suitcases' worth) back to Tokyo; I lived here for ~8 years in my 20s.
I had a hard time narrowing down my photos. I picked these three but if I had sat down to do this tomorrow, or yesterday, I might've picked something different. e.g., I don't have any doll photos here, which is kind of weird, because I got really into dolls (again) this year.

2023 in three photos )

This isn't the best photo I've taken or the most famous or beautiful shrine I've visited but when I saw my bike parked in front of the torii, I thought, I'm really home. I lived in Japan 2009-2010 and 2011-2018, and then I was back in the U.S. from 2019-2023. I used to love biking around, looking for shrines. I missed it so much while I was away. I love my mamachari bike and my dusty local shrines. I'm so happy to be back here. 2023 was a year of many good things but being back in Tokyo was the best thing.

Part of a long overdue reshoot. Getting that picture took a while. I actually went by the house a few times and lights were off. Sometimes, getting even one more shot on a certain level takes a lot of work. I didn't take as many pictures as I wanted to this past year, but I did put the work in and got some good enough to post.

We finally got back to travel after all the recent silliness and started to explore Wales just over the border from where we live in north Shropshire.

Wales is famous for its narrow gauge steam railways originally used in conjunction with the slate quarrying industry. It was said at one time that Wales 'roofed the world'.

We first visited the town of Tywyn on the Wesh coast. More years ago than I care to recall this was where I spent my first independent holiday at the age of fourteen and I'd aways wanted to go back. Fifty odd years later, I finally made it.

It's the home of the Talyllyn Railway (Rheilffordd Talyllyn in Welsh) and that was the first lot of steam:

2022 Portland Winter Light Festival

February is the start of my photography season, as I am a press photographer for the Portland Winter Light Festival. My cameras gather dust in December and January, so I know the year has actually started when I dust off the cameras and charge into inky cold evenings to photograph an event. In 2022 my coverage of the event was cut short by an accident, but before then I was able to capture some of the lights.
